From header to footer, does everything convey McCallister Sculpture? Here’s my brand audit checklist (SO to my wife who’s a marketing guru for getting me organized):
Feel free to use this for your own brand and let me know anything else you’d add!
- Is my bio accurate and updated?
- I noticed my “About Me” page was one of the most popular pages on my site for new visitors – you only make one first impression folks!
- Are my color themes on brand/ complement my content?
- “Does my theme match my blog’s intent? What about my font and color choices?”
- Does my header/ banner font match what’s on my marketing material?
- As per Krista: “Change up your fonts — every WordPress.com blogger has access to a collection of free Google fonts.”
- Is my logo prominently placed and recognizable?
- If you don’t have one, there are some cost-efficient ($5) options from graphic designers at Fivver.com.
- Are my social media channels consistent with my brand?
- Although content and tone may vary, basic commonalities are fundamental to your brand ie: name, colors, bio, URL
- Are my social media channels optimally placed to get new followers?
- Hint: do they have the “follow” buttons easy accessible? Is the widget a good preview of what they should expect?
- Do I have a good mix of content to engage my readers?
- Do you have photos, videos, quotes, short text, long texts, call to actions? NOTE: If you have a photography website, I don’t expect you to start writing short essays. But maybe your subject choice stays in a fresh rotation between landscapes, portraits, still-life, and throw in a selfie FTW!
- Is my tone consistent?
- Are you professional, personal, quirky, smart, casual, or a thought-leader? This is key to ensure your readers that your posts will bring about a predictable mood when they’re ready to read it.
- Does my menu convey what my site and brand is about, even if they don’t click in it.
- If your site could talk, this is equivalent to its elevator speech!
- Are those widgets strategic and have a purpose or are they unnecessary?
- Don’t have widgets for widgets sake! Every inch of your site is premium real-estate, and you (and your readers) deserve better than that.
Hope this helps fellow bloggers!
Here is my first audit update: adding video to my content that has recently been image heavy. I’ll be posting more time-lapse videos of me in the studio to keep it fresh and give my readers a sense of daily interaction!
o If your site could talk, this is equivalent to its elevator speech!
What a great line! Conveys your point beautifully. And an overall insightful article – thank you for posting.

This really helped me. I still need a logo and a photo for the cover. Not able to spend any money. Haven’t found a good way to make my own as yet. I am also looking for the ”right” attic photo.
I look forward to reading more from you here. I am in Blogging 201 but am just now able to start reading and commenting.
Have an awesome weekend.

Thank you Sarah! I look forward to your final touches on your page – an attic photo will really bring it all together for your site! As I mentioned, there are great options for custom logos on Fiverr.com that start at $5. So it may be worth spending some time on there and brainstorming ideas for your ideal logo. Best of luck on #bloggins201!

I am trying to hold off spending anything on this blog. It is too easy once you start spending to add a bit more here and a bit more there. I can handle the $5.00 and even $10.00 but not any more than that. We still have 8 plus days to go before we get paid again. It is never ending here.
I will find the right photo.
Have a good evening /rest of the week.

I completely understand, those little budgets can add up to a big monthly spend, so I understand the hesitancy. You’ll figure it out and I look forward to seeing it!

Thank you for understanding. Right now when my hubby gets on to me about all the time I spend on here I can still say “It hasn’t cost us anything”. He doesn’t say it very often thank heavens.
How is your week going?

Week is going great so far, thank you for asking! Looking to implement a lot of the things we’ve learned on here this week.
I have an idea for you Sarah. As you finish your #blogging201 challenge, why not set a goal for yourself and set your logo as a reward! Maybe when you reach 1000 followers, or when you finish one month of blog posts on time, or have a blog anniversary 🙂 That way, you’ll get something for all your hard work, and also be able to justify the $5-$10 because you know people are actually going to appreciate it, and it’s almost a well-deserved medal / motivation to keep going! If you truly enjoy what you’re doing, and I see that you do, it would be wonderful to have an image that represents you and your efforts 🙂
Just my personal opinion. I wish you the bestest of luck Sarah!

I haven’t posted it but :I am hoping to use my Christmas money from my dad on a few things like a logo for the blog.
I usually spend it on Danny and I. Not on anything for me.
This year I plan on being selfish for a change.
If I can. It is really hard for me.
I will have a good logo through if not BEFORE the NEW YEAR- then SOON AFTERWARDS.
The camera on the blog fits for now almost as much as the attic would. I take photos all the time, with a broken camera.
Enjoy your week.
I’ll be by to visit you soon.

What is your first name or do you go my McCallister?

My name is Ryan McCallister. It is a pleasure to meet you Sarah, and I truly admire your motivation – even with the broken camera. Don’t consider it selfish, you would spend that money on someone else to make them happy, and so why not invest in yourself? 🙂 Just my advice to you, and to my generous wife who feels the same way sometimes.

Ryan , Not I remember it. I need to Write it down. My memory is failing me more and more lately.
Love your comment about your wife.
It’s my PRIDE holding me back as much as anything right now. Danny would never even miss the $5.00 and neither would I. Pride might now be the right word.
We have issues right now.
I just love taking photos. Even when I can’t see the photo right away.
I do love digital but I DO MISS MY MINOLTA AND FILM.
I couldn’t afford it right now though so it is a good thing.
I love practicing with it though without film. Dreaming really of having a camera that works again.
I am rambling. Sorry.

you’re not rambling at all, you’re in the blogging world- that’s what we do 😉 it would definitely be great for you to have both digital and film accessible. It’s becoming a lost art for sure, but also a real specialty you shouldn’t lose!

I had a simple but good dark room in my house in Colorado Springs
I loved developing prints. Black and whites. My son would come over and work as well. He was really good.

I’m sure that your son is thankful for that rare experience! You should post some of those B&W images someday

Ryan, All my photos(except for a very few were destroyed in a fire in Colorado Springs the year after Bobby died.
He was thankful. We had some awesome times.
I have wonderful memories.
More so than most moms ever have.
I am fortunate for the 25 almost 26 years Bobby and I had together.
We had a blast together.
I write about those memories.

Oh I am so sorry to hear that Sarah. What a painful loss. My wife and I just had a baby boy, he is now 4.5 months. I cannot imagine what you went/ continue to go through. I admire your positive perspective, especially the thought “more so than most moms ever have”. It really is about the quality of time spent with them. Please do keep writing about those memories.

Ryan, Thank you for saying that. It does feel good to finally be writing about it OPENLY like I am.
